Pirates Grand Challenge Men's League

Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge week four wrap-up

by Ben-Piet Lotter

Randfontein impressed on and off the field on Saturday, trouncing Diggers 76-10 – testament to the fact that they are capable of stepping up to the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge should the opportunity arise in the future. The clear effort that has gone into maintaining the historic Randfontein club venue ensures that it remains a great destination for the local community and visiting fans.

The match between Roodepoort and Raiders lived up to expectations – a tough tussle with Roodepoort trumping Raiders 39-28 in the end.

Despite the 71-14 scoreline in favour of PUKKE, WITS Assistant coach Jamie de Bruin said: “I saw a lot of good things from my young side. We will start again on Monday and work hard towards Pirates.”

Pirates coaches Brian Armitage and George Makwena were happy with the 55-0 margin and overall performance against Alberton, but felt they still missed out on a few tries after not being clinical enough in the lineouts and at the breakdowns. Liam Larkin was named man of the match, and Ethan Anderson was a brick wall in defense.

UJ first team coach, Mac Masina, said his team were keen to restore some pride and came out firing against Wanderers, and Coach Guy Coutts agreed: “They were extremely clinical and outplayed us in a number of areas.” UJ carried the day with a 103-7 victory.

As winter arrives with a chill in the air this week, the forecast remains for more steamy hot Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge rugby this coming weekend.
